Miami-Dade Tax Collector Cracks Down on Fraudulent Disabled Parking Permits

The Miami-Dade Tax Collector’s Office has initiated action against fraudulently obtained disabled parking permits, starting the process of revoking those permits deemed illegitimate. This follows an audit of applications filed within the last two years, a collaborative effort between the Tax Collector’s Office and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, NBC Miami reported.

According to NBC Miami, County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez addressed the issue last month, stating, “Widespread abuse has harmed seniors, veterans, and residents with legitimate mobility disabilities. A system created to protect the most vulnerable has been exploited for too long. That ends now.” Fernandez’s office has begun distributing letters to individuals with permits found to be fraudulently obtained, informing them of the revocation.

These efforts to rid the system of fraud have led to stern warnings and potential legal action. “Your parking permit(s) have been cancelled and are no longer valid. In addition, you may also be prohibited from obtaining a disabled persons parking permit for a period of four (4) years,” the letters explain, as stated by Fernandez and referenced by NBC Miami. A reminder was also included, highlighting the legal consequences, “Continued use of the parking permit in your possession may result in up to one year in jail or a fine of $1,000, or both.”…
