Allapattah Road Rage: Miami Driver Busted After Teen Bicyclist Shot

A 35-year-old Miami man is behind bars after police say a roadside confrontation turned violent and left a teenager on a bicycle shot in the leg in Allapattah. Investigators say it started when the driver confronted three teens riding in the street, followed them around the block and, before it was over, one of the boys had been hit and rushed to a trauma center. Officers took the suspect into custody the following evening.

Miami police say the shooting unfolded just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1800 block of Northwest 18th Terrace, after three teens ages 15 through 17 were riding on Northwest 22nd Avenue, according to Local 10. The boys told detectives a driver in a white pickup trailed them and that one of the teens tossed an object at the truck just before shots were fired.

Surveillance, response and hospital care

According to police, surveillance footage shows a white pickup following the teens through the neighborhood, and the injured boy ultimately managed to flag down a Miami Police Department officer at Northwest 17th Avenue and 41st Street. Medics transported him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. Authorities say the incident first came to their attention after a ShotSpotter alert flagged possible gunfire in the area.

Arrest, recovered firearm and charges

Officers tracked the suspect to his home in the 2100 block of Northwest 18th Street the next night, where investigators say he admitted pulling the trigger. According to Local 10, police say he later drove to a cousin’s house in Hialeah and ditched a glove-wrapped gun in a dumpster, where an MPD detective recovered the weapon. Authorities arrested 35-year-old Yony Campbell on charges that include attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and improper exhibition of a firearm.
