As a Councilman for the City of Miami Springs, I know how important responsible tax policy is. I also know how deeply rising costs are affecting families across our state. That is exactly why discussions about property tax reform in Florida deserve serious attention.

But any proposal to significantly reduce or eliminate property taxes must be approached with caution, because for cities like Miami Springs, the consequences could be severe.

Miami Springs is not a large city with endless commercial development or major industrial tax generators. We are a proud, primarily residential community. About 70% of our ad valorem tax revenue comes from homesteaded properties, meaning it comes from the very residents who live here, raise their families here, and depend on city services every day…
