Jamaican national pleads guilty to smuggling firearms to Jamaica

MIAMI, Florida — A Jamaican national has admitted to illegally exporting firearms, magazines, and ammunition from the United States to Jamaica by hiding them inside furniture.

Taugea Ubert Dayes, a 33-year-old who performs under the stage name “Countree Hype,” pleaded guilty to one count of smuggling goods from the U.S. and one count of delivering a firearm to a common carrier without written notice, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.

“Illegal firearms trafficking fuels violence far beyond our borders,” said U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones. “This defendant concealed dozens of firearms inside furniture and attempted to ship them overseas to evade detection and arm the black market in Jamaica.”…
