MILWAUKEE — City of Milwaukee Alderman Alex Brower is defending his proposal to move the city away from We Energies and create a city-owned public utility, arguing the change could make power more affordable, more accountable and more reliable for residents.
Appearing on Wisconsin’s Morning News, Brower said the goal of the effort is “affordability, democracy, and tackling the climate crisis.” His plan, known as “Power to the People,” would involve Milwaukee exploring the purchase of We Energies infrastructure within city limits and operating the system as a public utility.
A major concern is cost. During the interview, host Vince Vitrano pressed Brower on whether the city could be looking at a price tag in the billions of dollars.
