MILWAUKEE, WI — In Milwaukee, where Zillow says the typical home sells for about $228,500, the gap between wanting to buy and being able to qualify can feel wide. Down payments, closing costs and credit rules can keep many renters on the sidelines, even when they are ready to leave apartment living behind.
That pressure was on display this weekend at Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America’s Achieve the Dream event, where prospective buyers were walked through the mortgage process and given help clearing some of the most common barriers to homeownership. For some attendees, the event was not just informational. It was a chance to learn whether they could move forward right away.
What NACA Says
NACA says its mortgage program offers below-market fixed interest rates, with no down payment or closing costs. The nonprofit also says it does not use credit scores in its decision-making. At the Milwaukee event, attendees began with a workshop, then uploaded financial documents and met one on one with a housing counselor.
In some cases, that process ended with an immediate answer on mortgage qualification. Roxanne Walczak said she and her son qualified at the event. Walczak is trying to secure a home for the two of them as she goes through breast cancer treatment and wants a stable place for her son, who is on the autism spectrum, to live in the future.
Why Demand Is Rising
Walczak said saving for a home has been difficult because daily bills leave little room to build a cushion. Another attendee, Claunette Guise, drove from Indiana and said the economy’s rising costs have made ownership harder to reach.
