Ole Miss Student Loses Home to Fire, Firefighters Hand Him Signed Uecker Ball First

Charlie Bongard was celebrating an Ole Miss football win Saturday night when his phone buzzed with devastating news: his off-campus house was on fire. The Glendale native and Ole Miss senior rushed home to find firefighters already battling the blaze, and by the time it was out, he had lost most of his belongings. Firefighters had grabbed a few things from his room, and the baseball signed by the late Bob Uecker was the first item they handed him.

Bongard, a lifelong Milwaukee Brewers fan, was watching No. 9 Ole Miss dismantle No. 13 Missouri 31-3 before 67,150 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium when he got the text, according to WISN. He and his roommates were safe, but he watched many of his belongings burn before firefighters could retrieve what little remained. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had accounted for four touchdowns that night, a detail that barely registered once Bongard learned what was happening back home, per the Southeastern Conference.

A Gift That Outlasted the Flames

The signed baseball was a gift from a relative who has since died, making its survival feel like more than luck to Bongard. He said he plans to keep the ball for the rest of his life, and firefighters’ decision to hand it to him before anything else only deepened its significance. Bongard is hopeful the ball is a sign of good things ahead for the Brewers in the coming weeks, the station’s report notes.

Bob Uecker died at age 90 on January 16, 2025, at his home in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, after battling small cell lung cancer since early 2023, according to Wikipedia. He served as the Brewers’ primary radio voice for 54 seasons, from 1971 through 2024, a run that made him a formative presence for generations of young fans like Bongard growing up in Wisconsin.

Milwaukee’s Historic Postseason Run

The timing of the salvaged keepsake lands squarely in the middle of a historic Brewers season. Milwaukee completed a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS on October 15, 2026, advancing to the World Series for the first time in 44 years, as reported by Urban Milwaukee. The Brewers finished the regular season with a major-league-best 103 wins. Game 1 is set for Friday at American Family Field in Milwaukee, where the Brewers will host the Tampa Bay Rays in a series guaranteed to crown a first-time champion, according to CBS 58…
