An investigation into deaths at the Milwaukee County Jail
After months in the works, Milwaukee County is one step closer to investigating the County Jail after the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors unanimously backed an external audit into conditions at the facility.
Triggered by a spate of deaths over the last year and a half, supervisors first called for an audit in late 2022. It resulted in a poorly received internal review carried out by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, which many critics deemed did not address concerns raised by those incarcerated at the jail and criminal justice advocates.
