Doc Rivers on being named Eastern Conference All-Stars head coach: “Maybe I’ll send my staff, and I’ll go on vacation”

To be named as head coach for the NBA All-Star game is an honor for any bench tactician in the normal course of business. Doc Rivers ‘ case is different.

Rivers has been the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks for a week. He took over a team that had the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. And he just picked up his first win as their head coach on Saturday night. Yet Doc was selected to coach the Eastern Conference All-Star team in the upcoming mid-season classic in Indiana.

“That’s ridiculously bad,” admitted Rivers. “It really is. Well, Adrian is gonna get some money, that’s for sure, and a ring. You know, it’s one of these quirky things. I think there should be a rule somehow that someone does it. Maybe I’ll send my staff, and I’ll go on vacation. I’m gonna run by Adam Silver. Adam’s a good man, I think he’ll understand.”

Not Doc’s fault, though

While Doc is in the ‘mess’ now, it’s not his fault. NBA rules state that the head coach for the team with the best record in the conference will automatically be the head coach for that conference’s All-Star game team.
