With the Philadelphia 76ers having ousted the Milwaukee Bucks four times in the last five playoffs, they found themselves in a favorable position in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in 1986. Though the Sixers trailed 113-112, Julius Erving had the ball in possession, poised for a wide-open 15-foot shot.
With a spot in the EC Finals at stake, the four-time MVP missed the game-winning shot, allowing the Bucks, at that time, to register their first Game 7 triumph. Following the tough result, Dr. J displayed exemplary grace by offering no excuses; instead fully embraced the heart-wrenching loss.
Bucks Coach couldn’t believe
Backed by Erving ‘s experience and calm demeanor, the scenario seemed tailor-made for him to make the shot. Even Bucks coach Don Nelson firmly believed in Julius’ ability to convert in such situations. Nevertheless, when the shot missed, Nelson himself was left in disbelief.
“When I saw Doc take the last shot, I knew, I was positive, he would make it , ” Nelson said . “I was the most surprised person in the whole world when it didn’t go in. Doc’s made so many big ones over the years you just expect it.”
