Greendale High School’s cheerleading team and pep band earned a national championship in Florida this past weekend.
The combined team competed at the Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School Cheerleading Championships at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando Feb. 9-12 and took first place in the Varsity Game Day Live! division of the competition. More than 1,000 high school and junior varsity teams competed in various divisions of the competition this year.
Nearly 70 Greendale High School students, members of Greendale High School’s varsity cheer team and Greendale High School’s Pep Band, collaborated to compete as part of Greendale High School’s Game Day LIVE! team. Greendale was one of five teams from around the country to qualify to compete at the national competition in the Game Day Live! category, according to an email from Greendale School District communications director Kitty Goyette.
The Game Day LIVE! division combines the efforts of cheerleading and band, focusing on “crowd-leading ability, execution, energy and overall performance to excite the crowd in the stands in support of their school and athletes,” Goyette said.
