Two Milwaukee charter schools — Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy and Milwaukee Excellence — on Tuesday announced plans to combine this fall.
The combined school will keep the Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy name and campuses, which have space for 850 students in grades six through 12, according to the announcement shared by communications firm H.PR Strategies.
The middle school campus will operate out of Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy’s current building at 4030 N. 29th St., which will be renovated.
The high school campus will be at a new property in Bronzeville. Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy launched a $25 million fundraising campaign for that campus in 2022, and it is now under construction at 2212-2228 N. Vel R. Phillips Ave.

Both current schools are run by their own nonprofit boards of directors. As charter schools, they are required to be authorized by a public board. Milwaukee Excellence is authorized by Milwaukee Public Schools, while Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy is authorized by the city of Milwaukee.
