Introducing Azizi: Milwaukee Zoo’s New Gorilla Leader

The Milwaukee County Zoo has introduced a new member to its animal kingdom.

Azizi, a Western Lowland Gorilla, has arrived in Milwaukee to take on the role of the silverback leader for two female gorillas, Dotty and Nadami, as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan® (SSP).

Previously a member of a bachelor group at Lincoln Park Zoo, Azizi has already impressed his new caregivers with his intelligence and impressive problem-solving abilities.

Azizi has a distinctive appearance, characterized by a strong brow ridge and a notable stoic side-eye glance.

Known for his patience, Azizi frequently uses sticks as tools to interact with enrichment puzzles, showcasing his cognitive skills and adaptability.

The Zoo reports that Azizi’s vocalizations, a series of grumbles, have been a clear indicator of his contentment and pleasure.

Since his arrival, Azizi has adapted well to his new environment, demonstrating a relaxed demeanor that has endeared him to his caretakers. “We adore him already!” shared a zoo spokesperson.
