SDC board chair Barbara Toles resigns, leaving 11 vacancies on 18-member board

The beleaguered Social Development Commission has lost another board member.

Barbara Toles, the SDC’s board chair, resigned during its biweekly board meeting Wednesday night.

SDC spokesperson and attorney William Sulton said Thursday that the toll of dealing with the collapse of the organization had become too much for Toles.

“Everything involving SDC, for me, is like a hair-on-fire situation,” Sulton said. “So it is not surprising that Barbara Toles and others have resigned because it’s just a lot of work. …

“None of them signed up for this, to be quite frank. Not a one.”

Toles didn’t return Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s calls for comment. Her resignation was first reported by the Neighborhood News Service.

Toles’ resignation leaves the quasi-governmental anti-poverty organization with 11 vacancies on its 18-seat board. Many of those vacancies are in leadership positions, including vice chair, treasurer, secretary and, now, board chair.

Toles stepped into the position six months ago after Elmer Moore Jr. resigned as board chair.
