‘I don’t want them to feel lost’: Milwaukee woman on a mission to help formerly incarcerated people get a second chance

MILWAUKEE — A former corrections officer is working to raise awareness about the challenges people who have spent time in prison face when trying to reenter society.

Data from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections shows of those that were released in 2021, 35.4% were re-incarcerated in Wisconsin within three years. A little over 51% who were released in the same year were rearrested for a criminal offense within three years of their release.

Virginia Pratt, the founder of Prosper Community Outreach, said a criminal record makes it hard for many people to find stable housing and employment. And without those things, she said the likelihood of returning to criminal behavior and old patterns increases, and that doesn’t benefit anyone…
