Sheriffs’ offices warn of scam calls in southeastern Wisconsin, ask for public to be ‘skeptical’

The call will be foreboding. It will seem official. And it will come with a direct order: pay up or face arrest.

In reality, these calls are a scam by those impersonating local sheriff deputies by calling members of the public with a false claim that they’ve missed jury duty or another summons. That’s how fraudsters in recent years have began targeting southeastern Wisconsin residents to make easy money.

“Thankfully, most such scam attempts that we’re aware of have been thwarted by rightly suspicious citizens who thought better of giving their financial information and instead chose to contact the MCSO to test the veracity of the calls,” said James Burnett in an email…
