New rhino & hippo habitat marks completion of Zoo’s Adventure Africa effort

The Milwaukee County Zoo opened its new Ladish Co. Foundation Rhino Care Center to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 9. It’s the final phase of the more than $50 million Adventure Africa upgrade.

The Milwaukee County Zoo opened its new Ladish Co. Foundation Rhino Care Center to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

The new building – which maintained about three-quarters of the old rhino and hippo habitat building – includes the Robert Dohmen Hippo Indoor Haven, which opened in 2020, as well as adjacent yards for zebras and red river hogs. It allows visitors to see the animals all year long.

The $22.6 million facility is the final phase of the zoo’s more than $50 million Adventure Africa habitat effort, which began in 2018 with construction of the new elephant and giraffe areas.
