Milwaukee Man Charged with Arson in Fire Leading to Pregnant Girlfriend’s Death

A Milwaukee tragedy has reached the public eye after a 21-year-old man, Cameron Washington, was charged with arson and recklessly endangering safety in a fire that left his pregnant girlfriend dead. According to a criminal complaint cited by WISN, police responded to a “subject with weapon” complaint on Jan. 5, discovering the residence ablaze. Inside, officers located Gladys Johnson, Washington’s pregnant girlfriend, unresponsive in the burning bedroom.

Family members attempt to piece together the events leading to the heart-wrenching discovery. CBS 58 reports that Johnson’s mother last saw her daughter alive earlier that day. Returning in the evening, she was prevented by Washington from entering the room where her daughter rested, or so she was told. The smell of smoke prompted her to call the police and attempt desperately to come to her daughter’s aid. As per CBS 58, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide, yet Washington has not been charged in Johnson’s death.

Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward on a bus. An officer found a lighter in Washington’s possession at the time of arrest, a detail that further solidifies the links to the fire.
