Washington County, Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office Warns Of New Scam

Here we go again! There’s a scam going around in Wisconsin and I think I have also been a victim of this scam and didn’t even realize it. That’s how subtle this one is.

If you thought scammers would move on in the new year, you’d be wrong. Scammers are still doing their thing, with a new scam reported right around the new year having to do with AI and weight loss.

Yup, they’ve really thought of everything and AI isn’t helping because it can make anything seem real! This scam has been reported so many times that the Better Business Bureau received nearly 200 reports about it.

Now, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin is warning residents about yet another new scam and like I said, this one is definitely more subtle than the rest.

New Text Message Scam Reported In Wisconsin – What To Know

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office shared a warning to residents on Tuesday (January 13th), sharing that some of those text messages you get that you think are an accident might actually be a scam.

I get these texts all the time! A scammer will text you and ask if you are still getting together today or will call you by the wrong name. I always thought people just had the wrong number but it turns out, this is actually a scam.

What To Do If You Get A Message Like This In Wisconsin

According to their warning, scammers use this as an opening to start a conversation with you, pretending to be clueless about who you really are. Eventually, they form a relationship with you and urge you to share personal information they will later use against you.

They also begin to ask you for things like money or if you have any interest in investing in cryptocurrency. They may even try to move the chat to a different platform where they can’t be tracked so be careful. Resist the urge to even mess with them for fun.

If you get a message like this, you should absolutely ignore it and block the number. Report the message as spam, and reach out to local law enforcement. They make a good point in that responding will let them know your number is active, even if you are simply stating that you aren’t the person they are reaching out to…
