Five years later, the Schlitz tied-house on Humboldt still awaits its comeback

Back in September 2021, Clarence Morse shrugged when I asked him about the risks of restoring the former Schlitz tied-house at Humboldt and North.

“I might be on a fool’s errand,” he said, smiling.

Five years later, the errand continues, though the stakes feel higher.

The 134-year-old corner building at 2249 N. Humboldt Ave., remembered by many as Zak’s, Zak’s North Avenue, or The Spruce Goose, has been sitting in limbo since the city accepted Morse’s proposal in 2019…
