Milwaukee ordinance to encourage landlords to install fire sprinkler systems in older buildings

A recently proposed Milwaukee ordinance looks to encourage landlords to install fire sprinkler systems in older buildings that are not required to have them.

It’s the latest measure from city officials in response to the deadly fire that killed five people and displaced around 100 others last year. That building was constructed in 1968 and was not required to have a sprinkler system under state law.

The ordinance β€” unanimously passed by the Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee Tuesday β€” would temporarily waive all permitting and inspection fees for the installation of sprinkler systems in older buildings that are exempt from having them…
