White Castle leaves University Avenue after 100 years

The final sliders are served and the sign at University Avenue’s last remaining White Castle delivers the news: “Permanently closed.”

The closure marks the first time in a century that University Avenue is without the iconic burger chain, which began selling five-cent burgers in 1921.

White Castle’s first two fortresses on University Avenue opened in 1926. One of those restaurants, at 615 University Avenue, was relocated to 1087 University Avenue in 1937.
