Fourth of July forecast update: Storms possible around Twin Cities

There’s a chance of storms interrupting Fourth of July festivities on Saturday evening, but far from a sure thing in any given location. In fact, if your fireworks are disrupted, you might be among the unlucky few whose plans are destroyed by ill-timed thunderstorms.

“Storm chances keep trending later, with greatest threat at the moment looking to be 9pm to 11pm, or just in time for your fireworks,” reads an update posted at 6:43 a.m. from the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities.

The 8 a.m. update from the HRRR model shows storms popping in central Minnesota by about 2 p.m. or 3 p.m., with those storms slowly sagging to the southeast towards the Twin Cities by about 10 p.m. However, take the model with a grain of salt, as the weather service believes storms will be flaring up and down and hard to predict.

The National Weather Service expects “isolated to scattered pulse-type” storms that will be fairly short-lived and unable to sustain themselves for very long. Those who do wind up under a storm can expect heavy rain and frequent lightning, with some approaching severe levels…
