Patients across the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota who carry a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage card are getting a direct instruction from their own hospital system: start looking at other plans now, because this one will not get them into a Fairview clinic much longer. The notice is not a rumor or a leaked memo. It sits on Fairview’s own website, aimed squarely at patients who need to make a decision before a federal deadline that has nothing to do with the dispute driving it.
Fairview Cuts Off UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage Scheduling on January 1, 2027
Fairview Health Services says it will no longer schedule appointments or services for patients enrolled in a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan starting Jan. 1, 2027. The health system spells out the reason in plain terms on its patient page, “UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage Coverage Update for 2027,” attributing the decision to “frequent coverage changes, denials, and payment issues” that it says “have made it difficult for patients to access timely, high-quality care.” Fairview adds: “We understand this change creates uncertainty and frustration. Our goal is to support patients with clear information and individualized guidance.”
The dispute is not settled. A UnitedHealthcare spokesperson told the trade outlet Becker’s Payer Issues in June that the insurer is “committed to using the more than six months remaining on our contract to reach an agreement that maintains long-term network access to Fairview Health for people enrolled in our Medicare Advantage plans.” As of Fairview’s own page, still live and unchanged as of today, no such agreement has been announced, and the January 2027 cutoff stands.

December 7 Is the Real Deadline, Not January 1
Fairview’s notice tells UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage patients to “review your insurance options and be prepared change coverage options during the Medicare open enrollment period Oct. 15-Dec. 7, 2026” if they want to keep seeing their Fairview doctors past the new year. That window is not something Fairview invented; it is the annual Medicare Open Enrollment period that Medicare.gov confirms runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 every year, with any change taking effect Jan. 1. Miss Dec. 7 while still holding a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan, and a patient is locked into that coverage for 2027 with no scheduled path back into a Fairview clinic or hospital until the next enrollment cycle…
