Frey vetoes Minneapolis City Council resolution calling for cease-fire in Israel-Hamas conflict

Mayor Jacob Frey announced today that he has vetoed a resolution passed by the Minneapolis City Council last week which called for a cease-fire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The resolution, which was approved by 9 of the 13 council members, urged an immediate cease-fire, humanitarian aid to Palestinians, an end to U.S. military funding to Israel, and the release of hostages and prisoners on both sides.

In vetoing the resolution, Mayor Frey said that while he supports a cease-fire in principle, he found the language of the council’s resolution to be “one-sided” in focusing on Palestinian history and grievances while ignoring those of Israelis.

“The resolution City Council approved uplifts the history of Palestinians, and all but erases that of Israeli Jews,” Frey wrote. “Including some people’s history as valid, truthful and righteous as it may be, while ignoring others, is neither progressive nor inclusive.”

The veto means the resolution will not go into effect unless the council can override Frey’s veto with support from nine members. The original vote indicates there may be enough support to do so.
