Minnesota Woman Charged with Embezzling $1 Million from Employer

A 51-year-old Eden Prairie woman has been indicted on federal charges of embezzling more than $1 million from her employer over a seven-year period, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger on Wednesday.

Monica Svobodny was the Supply Chain and Engineering Manager at Sico Inc., a furniture and home furnishing manufacturing company in Edina.

According to the indictment, Svobodny abused her position to embezzle funds for her personal use through unauthorized charges on company credit cards.

The charges allege that Svobodny used company cards for extravagant personal purchases like designer clothing, spa services, and luxury hotels.

To conceal the fraud, she allegedly left the improper charges in a pending status instead of submitting them to accounting. Svobodny also allegedly edited PayPal receipts to list fraudulent vendor names.

In total, Svobodny is accused of embezzling $1,137,000 from her employer over seven years. She has been charged with one count of wire fraud and will make her first appearance in U.S. District Court at a later date.
