Rain, snow, thunder all possible in Minnesota Thursday-Friday

A snowstorm is not coming any time soon to Minnesota, but there could be some thunder this Feb. 8 (Thursday) in places like the Twin Cities, Mankato, Rochester, St. Cloud and Duluth .

Yes, thunder. In February. Totally normal.

“Thursday doesn’t look all that interesting to me but we do have a little bit of CAPE on some models,” Bring Me The News meteorologist Sven Sundgaard said from the Galapagos Islands on Tuesday. “[The Storm Prediction Center] has general risk of thunder which is pretty impressive for early February. Looks like mostly some rain showers but some elevated thunder possible.”

There is a general thunderstorm chance (non-severe) on Thursday.

The best chance for widespread rain on Thursday is in northern Minnesota, though the Twin Cities should get in on some of the precipitation.

“The best chances for rain will be along and north of I-94 with locations farther south still probably seeing something, but lower totals expected,” the NWS says.

The rain will change over to snow as the back side of the system spins through the region Thursday night into Friday.
