Mid-week system MIGHT produce snow in Minnesota

Do you remember the last time there was accumulating snow in the Twin Cities? It was back on Jan. 19 when a whopping 0.1 inches of snow coated the ground. The last time more than an inch of snow fell was on Halloween.

Seriously. The 1.8 inches of snow that fell on Oct. 31 is the biggest single-day snowfall at MSP Airport, which is the official measurement station in the metro, this entire cold season.

The last time more than two inches of snow fell was April 1, 2023, when the metro picked up 3.2 inches. That was actually was the second day of a two-day total of 8.5 inches. Last winter was a real winter while this season has been a phantom winter, with just 7.3 inches of snow so far in the Twin Cities.

Putting the past aside for a second, there could be some accumulating snow Wednesday-Thursday this week. It’s definitely not a slam dunk and it will depend on the storm’s track and timing.

The system to impact the area in the Wednesday-Thursday timeframe is still rather uncertain. Most models depict a system forming to our west/southwest, but timing and exact placement are still up for debate,” reads the Sunday forecast discussion from the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service (NWS).
