Off-duty deputy thwarts attempted carjacking in Richfield

An off-duty Hennepin County Sheriff’s deputy intervened during a recent attempted carjacking in Richfield.

The sheriff’s office said Deputy Shinwaray was heading home for the day, still in uniform, and stopped at a gas station on 12th Avenue S. when he was flagged down to assist on Jan. 9. around 7:30 p.m.

A suspect, identified as 29-year-old Brandon Joseph Manypenny, is seen taking a gas nozzle out of a car while it was still pumping gas and then attempting to carjack the vehicle.

The incident was captured on Shinwaray’s body-worn camera.

According to a criminal complaint, Manypenny took the filling nozzle out of the gas tank “and began spraying the victim’s vehicle.” He then tried to start the car but the victim had already removed the keys from the ignition.

That’s when the off-duty deputy stepped in and forcibly removed Manypenny from the car and held him until officers from the Richfield Police Department arrived to make an arrest.

Police found a bloody knife on Manypenny during a search.
