Metro Transit says that crime was down 17.5% on its services in the second quarter of 2024, while ridership was up.
The transportation company said Tuesday that two years after implementing a plan to improve public safety on its buses and trains, crime has declined.
Ridership meanwhile has increased by 9% in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023.
“The trends we’re seeing are encouraging, but our work is far from over,” said Metropolitan Council Chair Charlie Zelle. “We are committed to maintaining a transit system that makes people feel safe and confident in their surroundings.”
The crime drop comes after a series of measures were implemented to combat public safety concerns, including the introduction of Transit Rider Investment Program (TRIP) agents on light rail services, who monitor fare compliance and help customers.
Metro Transit says a further 22 TRIP agents will be hired by the end of September.
Metro Transit says it contracted with 10 community-based organizations that offer resources to riders facing issues like drug addiction, homelessness, and mental illness. Over the past year, these agencies have connected with around 6,700 individuals and made around 3,800 referrals.
