Police shoot armed suspect who sparked ‘active shooter’ situation in Minneapolis

A man who sparked an active shooter situation in south Minneapolis on Friday night is in a critical condition after being shot by police.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara provided details of the incident that unfolded in the area of Minnehaha Avenue South and East 40th Street, which started at around 10:30 p.m. when multiple people called 911 reporting a man walking around with a shotgun.

Police were initially unable to find the man, but several new 911 calls came in around 4:30 a.m. reporting shots fired inside an apartment building on the 4000 block of Minnehaha.

The man was reportedly armed with multiple weapons including an AK-47 and a .45 handgun, and the aforementioned shotgun. Police arrived at the building and learned the man was inside an apartment, and gunfire could be heard coming from inside.

As the building was evacuated, the suspect was found on a stairwell in possession of the AK-47, the handgun, and a bag containing ammunition, while wearing a military-style flak jacket.
