Minneapolis showcasing Hispanic heritage on Lake Street with “The Taco Tour”

Minneapolis is kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month one day early with ” The Taco Tour ” along Lake Street this weekend.

More than 20 taco restaurants, taco trucks and food stands will be putting their cuisine and their culture on display during the event.

Organizer Peter Majerle says the event is about more than just the food.

“The other part of this too is also to bring some attention to the vitality of Lake Street,” says Majerle. “I know it’s gone through some challenge is in the last several years, and including now with construction and so forth, and other challenges in the city. And so we really want to open that up to the community and showcase the broad milieu of cultural offerings that that street has.”

The event is trying to showcase that part of the city’s thriving immigrant-driven food landscape. Majerle says more than 20 restaurants at set to proudly show off their very best dishes.

“It’s offering the public a way to show their values based on where they’re spending their dollars,” Majerle explains. “We can all go to a chain restaurant outside of a mall and that’s fine. This just has a different impact in the community.”
