Man shot by police charged with firing AK-47 throughout Minneapolis apartment building

The man accused of terrorizing a south Minneapolis apartment building last week by firing an AK-47 has been charged with felony assault.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that Nathan Matz, 39, is charged with three counts of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon after he repeatedly fired a gun inside a building near Minnehaha Avenue and East 40th Street.

As well as a court appearance on Friday, Matz is also facing an eviction hearing from the building in which the shooting took place next week.

“Mr. Matz’s dangerous actions put an entire apartment building and neighborhood at risk, and I’m grateful no one was hurt,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. “We must act with urgency to prevent gun violence in our community and ensure community safety.”

Police had initially been called around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 to a report that a man – later identified as Matz – was walked in the area of 40th and Minnehaha with a shotgun. While officers were unable to find him at the time, they were called again at 4:30 a.m. Saturday to multiple reports of an active shooter at an apartment building on the 4000 block of Minnehaha Avenue.
