Vikings elevate Gaskin, Williams for game vs. 49ers

The Minnesota Vikings have announced their final roster moves ahead of the team’s game on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

The team officially elevated running back Myles Gaskin and defensive lineman Jonah Williams from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday.

It’s the second consecutive elevation for Gaskin, meaning he only has one left before the Vikings will have to sign him to the active roster for the rest of the season, but the first for Williams.

Gaskin played just six snaps in Week 1 — all but one on special teams — as he was expected to be the club’s primary kick returner. While he was out there, he never actually returned any kicks, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Vikings opt to sign him when Brandon Powell has also been handling returning duties and kickoffs continue to frequently result in touchbacks. However, the team also has only two running backs currently on the 53-man roster, so the depth he provides is valuable.

Williams’ elevation could signal that undrafted rookie Taki Taimani, who played 14 snaps in Week 1 — 10 on defense — could be inactive unless the Vikings are planning to use an extra defensive lineman against the 49ers.
