Defense confident, praise for Perich and Brown; Notes & quotes following Gophers win over Nevada

The Minnesota Gophers are 2-1 heading into conference play following a dominant showing Saturday in a 27-0 win over Nevada.

The team now has to get ready for Iowa next weekend as Big Ten play opens with a nationally televised rivalry game.

But first, here are some notes and quotes following the Maroon and Gold’s win on Saturday.

  • The Gophers’ win over the Wolf Pack featured a some notable performances by a couple Minnesota freshmen.

With returner Quentin Redding out for the season , true freshman defensive back Koi Perich took over some of those responsibilities and tallied 22 yards on two punt returns. Redshirt freshman defensive back Kerry Brown had two of Minnesota’s three interceptions on the day.

Head coach P.J. Fleck offered praise for both of the freshmen.

“I’ve really never had a freshman that … I don’t know what the word is, enlightens me? Makes me feel calm and also, like, how’d he just make me feel that calm so quickly,” Fleck said of Perich, an Esko native. “He’s a really special talent. He’s gotta keep molding that … but every time he touches the football, I just sit there and go ‘Oh my gosh, something good’s gonna happen with it.’”
