It appears the Big Ten Conference has recognized (at least internally) that its officials made a mistake in calling back Minnesota’s successful onside kick against No. 12 Michigan for offsides on Saturday.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that the conference is altering how it officiates onside kicks in the future, adding an additional ref on the kickoff line. Originally it was just a single sideline judge on one side of the field.
In a statement to ESPN, the conference said the change was made to ensure officials are “in the best position to consistently make the correct judgment.”
After storming back to cut the Wolverines’ lead to 27-24, a Michigan special teamer was called offside on the Gophers’ successful onside kick attempt. Replay would later show that the top of his helmet was even with the kickoff line.
Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck told reporters after the game that the officials’ explanation for the call was that his player had “broke the plane” of the kickoff line.
