After less than a week of testimony, a jury in St. Paul finds Derrick Thompson guilty on all federal counts in a 2023 high speed crash that killed five young Somali women in Minneapolis.
The trial in federal court focused on Thompson’s illegal possession of drugs and guns.
Thompson still faces a separate state trial on murder and criminal vehicular homicide charges.
As for those state charges, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced in September that she’s adding 3rd degree murder charges against him. Thompson is already charged with 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the case.
He is accused of driving 95 miles per hour on 35W in June of 2023. Thompson was caught passing a State Trooper, getting off on Lake Street, running a red light and smashing into the victims vehicle at a high rate of speed.
While responding to the crash, police found a Glock 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine and “significant quantities” of fentanyl inside his car which led to his federal guilty verdict.
