Anoka man sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatal 2020 light rail station shooting

An Anoka man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing a man at a Minneapolis light rail station in 2020.

Tenzin Yamgha, 30, pleaded guilty in October to one count of 2nd-degree unintentional murder and was sentenced on Friday to 240 months in prison for the killing of Malcom Williams at the Lake Street and Hiawatha light rail station on Christmas Eve 2020.

Court records say Williams was shot in the upstairs escalator lobby area, and died shortly after responders arrived at the scene.

Surveillance video caught the shooting on camera, and shows Yamgha – accompanied by a woman – entering the lobby area while wearing a blue baseball hat, green hooded Nike jacket, and sunglasses.

The video shows Williams approach and confront Yamgha, who is seen to be holding a gun in his pocket.

Eventually, Yamgha told Williams, “I will pull the trigger,” and told him to step away, but the altercation continued with Williams taking Yamgha’s hat off of his head.

Yamgha is then seen pulling a black semi-automatic handgun out of his pocket and shooting Williams at least twice.
