Woman critically injured in Minneapolis hit-and-run crash

A Twin Cities woman is facing a long road to recovery after she was struck by a driver, who fled the scene, in northeast Minneapolis early New Year’s Day.

Michaela Howk suffered critical injuries, including broken and shattered bones and a brain bleed , when she was hit around 2 a.m. Wednesday near University and Fourth avenues.

“At just 26 years old, Michaela had her entire life ahead of her, full of hope, dreams, and plans for the future including starting her new job at Children’s Hospital in the ER on January 6th,” her cousin, Nate Bauer, wrote on GoFundMe . “Now, she’s facing a long and difficult road to recovery—and we need your support.”

As of Friday morning, the fundraiser has collected over $37,000 to help cover costs associated with surgeries, rehabilitation and home modifications.

“In addition to the medical costs, we will need to make modifications to her home to accommodate her new needs,” Bauer wrote on behalf of the Howk family. “This will include making the house wheelchair-accessible, which will be a significant financial burden for our family.”
