Minneapolis announces ‘significantly’ reduced crime rates, with fewer shootings on Northside

The number of people shot in north Minneapolis last year was the lowest it’s been since 2014 — part of a significant drop in crime citywide, Major Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced Saturday.

According to a news release from the city, the police department’s Fourth Precinct — which covers north Minneapolis — saw 132 gunshot victims last year, a 21% decrease since 2023 and “within pre-pandemic levels.”

Overall, gun crimes and incidents were down across the board in north Minneapolis, per the city’s data. Additionally, the release says the overall Gun Crime Index — which tracks gun-related calls from shootings to ShotSpotter activations — dropped by 14%.

The city says the drops in assaults, homicides, and burglaries are the result of “a combination of focused enforcement, proactive policing, community engagement, cooperation with community groups and partner agencies, and the significant impact of federal RICO cases aimed at dismantling organized crime.”…
