Minnesota forecast: Crazy temperature spread, severe storms, rain, freezing rain and heavy snow

After a beautiful Thursday, Minnesota is set to enter a wild three days of weather Friday-Sunday. The 72-hour whirlwind will feature a crazy temperature contrast Friday from central Minnesota to southern Minnesota, along with a chance for severe thunderstorms. Then on Saturday, a strong system will bring rain, freezing rain and accumulating snow to the state.

Friday: Big temperature spread, severe storms possible

“Friday will feature a 30+ degree temperature spread from north to south across the region, along with the chance for isolated severe storms during the evening,” says the National Weather Service.

There could be a temperature spread of 15-20 degrees where the warm front sets up, and right now that’s looking to be somewhere near the northern metro. That means it could be 55 degrees in Lino Lakes and 75 degrees in Minneapolis.

The spread will be even great over larger distances. for example, there will be temps in the 40s in northern Minnesota while a place like Mankato soars to 85.

Later Friday, scatter thunderstorms could develop along a cold across southern and eastern Minnesota. Some storms could pack a punch with hail and strong winds…
