Winter storm watch issued as heavy snow approaches Minnesota

It’s April Fools’ Day on Tuesday but we’re not joking about the monster snowstorm that is set to slam Minnesota on the first two days of April.

A winter storm watch is in effect Tuesday-Wednesday for almost the entire northern half of the state, stretching from just west-northwest of the Twin Cities all the way to international border.

“There is an 80 percent chance for at  least 6 inches of snow accumulation,” the National Weather Service says of counties included in the watch. “There is a 30 percent chance for at least 12 inches of snow or more along the North Shore and around the Brainerd Lakes. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.”

The powerful storm is expected to bring heavy snow into Minnesota by early Tuesday, spreading east-northeast throughout the day and lasting through most of the day Wednesday.

How much snow? This is the Monday morning outlook from the National Weather Service as the system is set to arrive early Tuesday and depart by early Thursday.

While the North Shore is a slam dunk to get rocked with snow, the key to where the highest snowfall totals will end up elsewhere is dependent on where the rain-snow line sets up early Wednesday…
