Will all of the ingredients come together and set the stage for severe storms as far north as Mankato and the Twin Cities today? It certainly looks like that’ll be the case.
“Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and last into the evening,” the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities says. “A few storms could be strong to severe, especially in southern Minnesota. The main threat is large hail, but heavy rain, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.”
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center says the the environment in southern Minnesota “will favor a mix of supercells and storm clusters capable of producing large hail (generally 1-1.75 inch diameter) and isolated strong-severe gusts (50-60 mph).”
As the NWS points out in the graphic above, there could be two waves of storms. The first could begin as early as 2-3 p.m. and they could be further north — perhaps tracking along a line from west to east through the Twin Cities metro…
