Brooklyn Park Police Warn of Increased Theft in Facebook Marketplace Transactions; Urge Use of Safe Exchange Zones

In a recent alert issued via social media, the Brooklyn Park, MN Police Department has reported a rise in theft during transactions arranged through Facebook Marketplace. The warning came after two separate incidents where individuals were robbed after attempting to purchase PlayStation consoles. In one case, a victim sustained injuries when the thieves made a getaway while the transaction was in process. In light of these events, the Police Department encourages locals to use internet purchase exchange zones located at their precincts for safer transaction experiences.

The exchange zones aimed to reduce risks associated with person-to-person sales and provide a monitored, public space for buyers and sellers to complete their deals. “We’ve had two recent incidents involving Facebook Marketplace meetups that turned into thefts,” the Brooklyn Park Police Department’s post detailed these unfortunate cases, note mentioning that “in both cases, suspects used a vehicle to flee after taking cash during supposed PlayStation (video gaming console) sales.”
