A business that has been open 24/7 for over 30 years in Minnesota says it’s closing its doors for good this weekend.
The store says it has had a difficult time maintaining stock on its unique selection of merchandise, and it has been a struggle to “keep customers coming back,” so the decision was made to close.
Minneapolis’ Legendary Sex Shop Closing for Good
Located just blocks from the Target Center on 2nd Ave. N in Minneapolis’ North Loop Warehouse District, SexWorld has been the one-stop shop for adult-themed products and entertainment since it opened in 1993.
Over the years, SexWorld has done everything it could to stay in business, according to a post from a SexWorld employee. Jay Limbacher noted, “Attempts through the past years to keep the businesses afloat have not gone unrecognized. In 2020, SexWorld added an ‘essentials’ section to remain open and comply with the non-essential business closures during the start of the COVID Pandemic.”
Even after closing their other brand, Downtown Intimates, to focus entirely on keeping SexWorld afloat, the efforts ultimately weren’t enough. SexWorld is now set to close for good on Sunday, June 29.
The Beginning of the End
At the beginning of the year, SexWorld made the dramatic change of removing its 24/7 hours, and began operating from 9 AM until Midnight, and 1 AM on Saturdays. Limbacher said this was the moment he knew the end was near.
A Minneapolis Landmark With Hollywood Connection
At one time, SexWorld was a gigantic three-story venue that included the store and other “attractions,” including the “Dollhouse” live peep shows. Award-winning screenwriter and producer Diablo Cody once worked there as a stripper. She’s best known for the movies Juno, Jennifer’s Body, and more recently, Lisa Frankenstein.
