Some Eagan residents are learning this week that they may have been exposed to elevated lead levels that were emitted from a lead-melting facility earlier this year.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) sent a letter to residents this week, warning that lead emissions from Gopher Resource, located at 695 Yankee Doodle Road, were at unacceptable levels between January and March — and the concerning emissions spanned within about three-quarters of a mile from the facility.
According to the MPCA, air quality monitors “showed higher-than-acceptable readings of lead in the air.” Lead levels in the air returned to “acceptable levels” in April.
No amount of lead in the body is safe, according to the Minnesota Department of Health — and small amounts can be harmful, “especially for children.”…
