North Minneapolis woman calling for action after the shooting death of an 11-year-old

Community activist Angela Williams, reflecting on the shooting death of Amir Atkins and the arrest of his accused killer, a 16-year-old, has some pointed questions.

“The first thing I thought about was why do they have guns?” she says. ”Why does one 11-year-old have a gun, and why does a 16-year-old have a gun, and why are they shooting at each other?”

Williams, a mother of five, who calls north Minneapolis home, is pushing for change, including a community summit at Folwell Park, where Atkins was shot and killed on June 23. “We have to, as a community, start telling where the guns are,” she declares. “We have to. If not, we’re going to die by the gunfire.”…
