Damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes: Intense storms could hit Twin Cities

Sunday will be extremely hot and humid before intense storms develop and bring a threat of damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes to Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro area.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed most of Minnesota in a slight risk (level 2 of 5 on the severe scale) for severe storms. The expectation is for storms to erupt somewhere in central Minnesota close to dinner time.

“These storms will be capable of very large hail and perhaps a few tornadoes during the first couple of hours,” the SPC says. “After that, upscale growth is likely with damaging winds becoming the main concern as storms build southeastward across southern MN and into central WI.”

The HRRR model has consistently produced explosive storms in central Minnesota between 5-7 p.m., with those storms growing into a cluster and blasting towards the Twin Cities around 10 p.m…
