MINNEAPOLIS — Hennepin County will pay a $1.6 million settlement to a former prosecutor who accused former Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman of sexism and workplace retaliation, and current county attorney Mary Moriarty for continuing retaliation and failing to abide by the original settlement.
Amy Sweasy Tamburino originally filed a complaint against Freeman, which the Hennepin County Board approved a settlement of $190,000; however, Sweasy claims that retaliation continued, resulting in her resignation. According to KARE 11’s Lou Raguse, the settlement is the largest employment settlement ever approved by the Hennepin County Board.
“This case was about my experience with unlawful retaliation and discrimination; it was also about holding institutions accountable to the very laws and professional rules of conduct we are all, especially as lawyers, required to follow,” said Sweasy in a statement. “The employees and citizens of Hennepin County deserve leaders and institutions who raise the bar on workplace protections—not resist them.”…
