Minnesota BCA reports sharp drop in no-knock warrants since 2022

Law enforcement’s use of “no-knock” warrants has fallen almost 80% statewide since 2023, when the Legislature approved restrictions on the controversial practice, according to Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) data.

A recently released annual report revealed that just 19 no-knock warrants were requested across Minnesota in 2024, compared to 89 in 2023 and 185 in 2022. Decreases in the amount of warrants issued and executed were similar over each year.

Of all Minnesota law enforcement agencies, Pine County had the most no-knock warrant activity in 2024. The Pine County Sheriff’s Office requested and issued five warrants but only executed four of them, according to the BCA.
